El Cholo is Los Angeles' oldest Mexican restaurant — it traces to 1923, when Rosa and Alejandro Borquez opened the Sonora Café on Western Avenue, and moved to its current 1121 South Western Avenue home in 1931. It celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023 and is famous for its brick-red dried-chile enchilada sauce, seasonal green corn tamales, and popularizing nachos in Los Angeles starting in 1959.
