H.J. Heinz Company was founded in Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania in 1869 by Henry John Heinz, who bottled horseradish as his first product. Tomato ketchup followed in 1876. Heinz's iconic eight-sided ketchup bottle debuted in 1889 and was patented in 1890, and today the brand commands roughly 60 percent of the US ketchup market. The '57 Varieties' slogan, introduced in 1896, was a marketing device from the start — the company already made more than 60 products. Heinz relocated its global headquarters to Pittsburgh and operates major US production facilities in Fremont, Ohio. A 20-oz bottle of Heinz Tomato Ketchup retails for about $3.50–4.00 at most grocery stores.
