The Hershey Company was founded by Milton S. Hershey in 1894 after he sold his Lancaster Caramel Company and committed to making milk chocolate affordable for everyday Americans. He built a factory — and an entire company town — in Derry Church, Pennsylvania in 1903, renaming the town Hershey in 1906. It is still one of the largest chocolate manufacturing facilities in the world. Hershey became America's dominant chocolate brand through the 20th century and today generates roughly $11 billion in annual revenue, selling chocolate in more than 70 countries. The brand's baking products — particularly Hershey's Natural Unsweetened Cocoa and Hershey's Special Dark Cocoa — are the foundation of an enormous number of American home-baking recipes. The 'Perfectly Chocolate' Chocolate Cake recipe printed on the back of Hershey's Cocoa cans has been made by tens of millions of American home bakers and is considered one of the three most iconic back-of-package recipes in American food history, alongside Nestlé Toll House chocolate chip cookies and Campbell's green bean casserole.
