King's Hawaiian was founded in 1950 by Robert R. Taira in Hilo, Hawaii — the son of Japanese immigrants who graduated top of his baking class and built on the Portuguese sweet bread tradition brought to the islands by 19th-century immigrant workers. The bakery moved to King Street in Honolulu in 1963 (becoming King's Bakery), then opened a 24,000-square-foot facility in Torrance, California in 1977 as King's Hawaiian Bakery. The 12-pack pull-apart dinner rolls launched in 1983 and became the brand's most iconic product — soft, pillowy, and subtly sweet, now the most purchased specialty roll in America and a fixture of every Thanksgiving table. A 12-pack retails for about $5–6 at most grocery stores.
