Libby's canned pumpkin has been produced at a plant in Morton, Illinois since the company acquired the rights to the Dickinson pumpkin cultivar in 1929. Morton calls itself the Pumpkin Capital of the World; Libby's controls approximately 85 percent of the US canned pumpkin market. The Dickinson is a tan, oblong variety of Cucurbita moschata — closer to butternut squash than orange carving pumpkins — grown under contract across roughly 4,000 acres of Tazewell County, Illinois. The famous back-of-can pumpkin pie recipe has appeared on Libby's labels since the 1950s and is, by sheer volume, the most-replicated Thanksgiving pie in America. Libby's was acquired by Nestlé in 1972. A 15-oz can retails for about $2.50–3.00 at most grocery stores.
