Mrs. Fields was founded by Debbi Fields in Palo Alto, California, in August 1977 — originally as Mrs. Fields Chocolate Chippery. On opening day she sold nothing until she walked outside and handed free cookies to passersby; by close, the case was empty. At its peak the chain operated more than 650 retail locations across the US and 80 locations in 11 other countries, selling soft, thick cookies with crispy edges and gooey centers. The cookies are famous for being slightly underbaked — pulled from the oven while the centers still look glossy, then finished by carryover heat on the pan. A 6-count box of assorted cookies retails for about $12–14 in-store and online.
