Royal Dansk Copycat Recipes

Royal Dansk is the Danish butter cookie brand behind the iconic royal blue round tin, first baked in 1966 in Helsingør, Denmark. In 1990 the company merged with another Danish biscuit maker, Kjeldsen, to form Kelsen Group A/S. Campbell Soup Company acquired Kelsen in 2013; Ferrero purchased the group from Campbell's in 2019 for approximately $300 million. The cookies are still manufactured exclusively in Denmark at facilities in Nørre Snede and Ribe. The tin contains five classic shapes — Vanilla Ring, Pretzel Style, Finnish Style, Country Style, and Coconut — made from a butter-sugar-egg-flour dough with no preservatives or artificial colors. The blue tin has become a cultural object in its own right: in Filipino, Caribbean, Asian, and many other diaspora communities worldwide, the empty tin is so reliably repurposed as a sewing kit that 'opening a Royal Dansk tin and finding thread' is a universally understood experience. A standard 12-oz tin retails for about $6–10 at most US grocery stores.
