The Silver Palate was the specialty food shop opened at 274 Columbus Avenue on Manhattan's Upper West Side in July 1977 by Sheila Lukins and Julee Rosso. The shop sold house-made prepared foods — roasted chickens, pâtés, salads, and cakes — to neighborhood professionals, and the pair published The Silver Palate Cookbook in 1982 (Workman Publishing). The book sold millions of copies, ranks among the best-selling cookbooks of all time, helped define ambitious American home cooking, and introduced Chicken Marbella — a sweet-savory prune, olive, caper and garlic overnight-marinated chicken that became one of the most replicated dinner-party recipes in American history. The shop closed in 1993.
