The Slanted Door Copycat Recipes

The Slanted Door was Charles Phan's groundbreaking San Francisco restaurant that made Vietnamese food fine dining — opened in 1995 in the Mission District on Valencia Street, moved to the Ferry Building Marketplace in 2004. Phan won the James Beard Award for Best Chef Pacific in 2004 and received multiple Outstanding Restaurant nominations. The glass-walled room facing the Bay Bridge was the destination restaurant in San Francisco for 16 years, drawing Alice Waters, Ruth Reichl, and visiting Michelin-starred chefs. The Ferry Building location closed in 2020 when the pandemic made the economics impossible; Phan died of cardiac arrest in January 2025 at age 62, before his planned reopening. His signature dish — shaking beef (bò lúc lắc) made with filet mignon tails — is among the most searched recipes from any American restaurant.
