Walkers Shortbread Copycat Recipes

Walkers Shortbread was founded in 1898 by Joseph Walker in the village of Aberlour-on-Spey in the Scottish Highlands — at the heart of Speyside, Scotland's whisky-distilling region. Walker started baking shortbread and oatcakes in a rented wooden cottage and sold door-to-door to locals and distillery workers. The company has remained family-owned for four generations; James Walker (Joseph's grandson) expanded it internationally in the 1970s and introduced the iconic red tartan tin in the 1980s, which now sells in over 95 countries and has become one of the world's most recognizable Christmas gift packages. The recipe has been unchanged for over 125 years: flour, butter, sugar, and salt — nothing else. The classic 1:2:3 sugar-to-butter-to-flour ratio by weight is the technical foundation of the shortbread's signature sandy, crumbly snap. A Walkers Assorted Tin (400g) retails for about $10–14 at US grocery stores; an Assorted Gift Box (900g) for about $18–25.
