A bad avocado feels mushy and sunken, has dark stringy or black flesh inside, and smells sour or rancid. Brown flesh near the surface is just browning; widespread black or moldy flesh means toss it.
Signs Avocados have gone bad
Very mushy, sunken skin. If your thumb leaves a deep dent and the fruit feels hollow or watery, it’s overripe. Open it before deciding, since the inside might still be partly usable.
Black, stringy, or dark gray flesh. Streaks of dark, fibrous, or bruised flesh through the middle mean it’s past its best. Small bruised bits can be scooped out, but lots of it means toss.
Mold, white or gray fuzz. Fuzz on the skin or flesh means the avocado is spoiled. Avocados are soft and moist, so don’t just scoop around it.
Sour, rancid, or fermented smell. Ripe avocado smells mild and nutty. A sour, chemical, or sharp odor means the oils are going bad.
Off taste. A bitter, soapy, or sour taste means the fruit has gone off. Spit it out and discard the rest.
Dark, shriveled skin that’s pulling away. Skin that’s deeply wrinkled and flesh that’s shrunken and watery usually means it’s well past ripe.
Looks weird, but it's fine
Brown flesh on the cut surface. That’s oxidation, the same as an apple turning brown. Scrape off the brown layer; the green flesh underneath is fine.
Dark skin color on Hass avocados. Hass skin turns from green to dark purple-black as it ripens, so color alone doesn’t mean it’s bad. Judge by feel.
A few small brown flecks or stringy fibers. Tiny fibers or light brown specks can be natural and are harmless to eat, although larger dark patches should be cut out.

How to store them
Ripen hard avocados on the counter, and move them to the fridge once they give slightly when pressed to slow things down.
Store cut halves with the pit in, brush with lemon or lime juice, and press plastic wrap directly onto the flesh.
To speed ripening, put them in a paper bag with a banana for a day or two.
If it’s just surface browning, scrape it off and eat the green flesh. If the flesh is brown or black throughout, stringy, or tastes sour, throw it out.
How do you know if an avocado is bad without cutting it?
Look for a very soft, sunken feel, a hollow sensation, mold on the skin, or a sour smell. If you press and the fruit feels watery or the skin is leaking, it’s likely done.
Is a rock-hard avocado bad?
No, it’s just not ripe yet. Leave it on the counter for a few days. If it gets wrinkly and stays hard without softening, it may have been damaged and won’t ripen well.
General guidance based on USDA FoodKeeper. Storage times are estimates and conditions vary. When in doubt, throw it out.
