Hot dogs are bad if they feel slimy or sticky, smell sour, or look dull, gray, or fuzzy. An opened package lasts 1 week in the fridge, and an unopened one lasts up to 2 weeks.
When in doubt, throw it out. Bacteria that cause food poisoning often don't change the smell or look. Go by the time limits below too.
Signs Hot Dogs have gone bad
Slimy or sticky coating. Slick franks, or liquid in the package that has turned thick and cloudy, mean bacteria are growing.
Sour or off smell. Hot dogs smell smoky and savory. A sour, tangy, or rancid odor when you open the package is a clear no.
Dull, gray, or faded color. Normally pink or reddish. A grayish or faded look, or green spots, is a warning.
Mold or white fuzz. Fuzzy patches mean the whole package should be discarded.
Past the open-package window. Listeria can grow in the fridge with no change in look or smell. Once opened, use within a week.
Looks weird, but it's fine
Slightly cloudy package liquid. A bit of thin, clear-to-cloudy brine in a fresh package is normal. It should not be thick, stringy, or smelly.
Dark spots from grilling. Char marks are just from cooking, not spoilage.
Freezer burn. Dry, pale patches on frozen hot dogs are cosmetic and do not make them unsafe.

How to store them
After opening, seal the leftover hot dogs in a zip bag or airtight container and use within a week.
Freeze extras in a flat bag. They thaw quickly in the fridge or microwave.
At cookouts, do not leave them out for more than 2 hours (1 hour on a hot day). Keep them in a cooler until grill time.
Unopened hot dogs kept cold may be fine for a little while past the date, but once opened, use them within 1 week. If they are slimy or smell off, throw them out.
Are hot dogs OK to eat cold, straight from the package?
They are precooked, but Listeria can be a concern, so it is safest to heat them until steaming hot (165°F), especially for pregnant people, older adults, and young children.
Does cooking kill bacteria in spoiled hot dogs?
Heating kills live bacteria but not toxins from spoilage. Slimy, sour, or old hot dogs should be thrown out, not cooked.
General guidance based on USDA FoodKeeper. Storage times are estimates and conditions vary. When in doubt, throw it out.
